Edgar Aldous (1842 - 1917) - our Northern Start Point
Edgar ALDOUS was born to Henry
and Sarah in Worlingworth Suffolk on 1st October 1842, and was
christened on the 30th October 1842. He came north toTintwistle
along with his parents. He eventually met and married Mary MARSHALL
in 1869 in Hadfield, Cheshire 1870. Mary had been born in Tintwistle in
1844.
Edgar and Mary had six children; the eldest
was called William Henry born in 1872. The second child was Joseph
born on 1875. Followed by Thomas born on 26th July 1877
then by Sarah Jane in 1880, Frank in 1882 and finally Annie
born in 1883. Edgar was described as a ‘House Painters Labourer’ on the 1901 census,
and just as a Labourer on Sarah Jane’s marriage certificate a few months
later the same year.
Although Henry was responsible for bringing the
family north, and Edgar was not actually born in the north, never the less
Edgar was responsible for establishing our family line in the north with his
own offspring.
Living at New Street
Tintwistle in Cheshire at
the time of the birth of William Henry, Joseph and Thomas, the family had
moved to 50 Post Street, Glossop Dale in Derbyshire when Sarah Jane and
Frank and probably Annie were born. The family (except for William Henry) had moved again by
the time of the 1901 census and were living in South Yorkshire at 17 Haywood
Park, Deepcar, now believed to be known as 17 Marsh Street. The whole estate
of five rows of terrace houses is known as Haywood Park, but each row of
houses now has its own street name.
Edgar would appear to have had a variety of
jobs in his lifetime; the earliest one we have knowledge of was of him being
described on a copy of Thomas’s birth certificate as a ‘Self Actor (should
have read Acting) Minder’ which is a person in charge of the automatic
spinning mule in the cotton mills, and was still employed as a Cotton
Spinner at the 1881 census. He was described as a ‘House Painters Labourer’
on the 1901 census, and just as a Labourer on Sarah Jane’s marriage
certificate a few months later the same year.
