During his lifetime Fred had been a member of the local Labour Party, once standing for local council; he had also been on the board of the local Co-op. Fred also did service as a Special Constable and with the St. John's Ambulance Brigade. He worked in the Spring Department of the local Steel works where he was convener for the local Transport and General Workers Union.
